FLASHBACK: Government Supplies AK-47 to Us—Confession of Fulani Herdsman Sparks Fresh Outrage

A resurfaced video showing a Fulani herdsman confessing that the Nigerian government supplies arms to their group has triggered anger online, reigniting concerns over the government’s alleged involvement in the country’s worsening insecurity.

The 44-second clip, originally filmed in 2021 during a meeting between Fulani herdsmen and Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, was reposted on June 19 by X user Nedu Ani (@Nedumcity_). The post was captioned, “Government and politicians are the ones sponsoring Fulani Islamic Jihad.”

In the video, the herdsman said, “I swear to the Almighty Allah that it’s the government that is giving arms to us. Fulani don’t know what gun is. We are only herdsmen. Cows don’t give birth to guns. I swear to Allah, we are on our own, and the government supplies AK-47s to us. I am not afraid to say the truth.”

Though the recording dates back to 2021, it has resurfaced at a time when the Tinubu administration is battling to contain growing insecurity across the country. The claim, though unverified, has further fueled public mistrust and reignited questions about who truly arms the violent groups destabilising Nigeria.

There has been no official response from the Nigerian government, security agencies, or the military to the video or the renewed attention it has gained.

The video has triggered a flurry of responses online, with users voicing outrage, suspicion, and frustration. @masuzafi recalled, “Zamfara State made a similar declaration some time ago,” while @Les_du_dis stated, “Buhari has a lot to explain to Nigerians.”

Echoing concerns about complicity, @FranciscoBrainy remarked, “That’s why the police and soldiers look away during the attacks. They’re only doing the work of their paymasters.” @JardaniJovonovv expressed scepticism, saying, “He isn’t the first that has made this revelation, and it only ends as a sound bite.”

@zuzlonp offered a prayerful reaction with, “May God help us.” Meanwhile, @Rotleo3819 criticized the lack of specifics, saying, “He should stop crying. As he dey talk, make he dey mention names nah. Which one is govt that is giving us gun, you don’t know people that hired you.”

Despite government claims that efforts are ongoing to stem illegal arms flows, widespread banditry, farmer-herder clashes, and communal violence continue to claim lives across the country.
