Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State donated 14 new SUVs to the newly ordained priests of the Abakaliki Diocese.
He presented the vehicles during their ordination ceremony at St. Theresa’s Catholic Cathedral in the state capital on Saturday.
Despite the prevailing economic difficulties and Ebonyi State’s struggles with poverty, as evidenced by its low ranking on the poverty index, Governor Nwifuru has demonstrated notable generosity.
He explained that the donation of vehicles to the newly ordained priests was meant to support and facilitate their spiritual duties, enabling them to effectively serve their congregations and spread the word of God.
Last July, Governor Nwifuru exhibited similar generosity by gifting five vehicles to newly ordained priests, showcasing his consistent support for the religious community in Ebonyi State.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Ebonyi State ranks as the poorest state in Southern Nigeria, with an alarming 80% poverty rate, placing it fourth on the national poverty index. The state is only surpassed by Sokoto, Taraba, and Jigawa, all in the Northern region, in terms of poverty levels.
Concerns are mounting over Governor Nwifuru’s priorities, as civil servants in Ebonyi State have recently expressed disappointment and frustration over the modest N10,000 salary increase. This increment falls short of their expectations, raising questions about the state’s resource allocation.
