Governor Umaru Bago Proposes N1.20 Trillion Budget for 2025

The Niger State Government, at its Executive Council meeting on November 26, 2024, presented a draft budget estimate of N1.20 trillion for the 2025 fiscal year.

The proposed budget, which is awaiting legislative approval, reflects a significant increase compared to the 2024 fiscal plan.

The Honorable Commissioner for Planning, Mustapha Ndajiwo, outlined the details during the presentation. He revealed that the draft budget comprises N188.42 billion (15.68%) for recurrent expenditure and N1.01 trillion (84.34%) for capital expenditure. This allocation demonstrates the government’s priority on infrastructural development and key projects.

Compared to the approved 2024 budget, the new estimate marks a 32.94% increase. Even after factoring in the N191.98 billion supplemental allocation added to the 2024 budget, the 2025 draft proposal still shows an increase of 1.18% in recurrent expenditure and 32.98% in capital expenditure.

Governor Umaru Bago attributed the sizable budget to the pressing need to address infrastructure deficits and development gaps across Niger State. He also noted the impact of inflation on project costs and government operations.

“This budget size reflects the urgent need to bridge gaps in critical infrastructure and key development sectors. It is also a response to the inflationary pressures we face as a country,” the governor explained.

Following deliberations, the Executive Council approved the budget estimates and directed the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mustapha Ndajiwo, to submit the proposal to the Niger State House of Assembly for further consideration.

If approved, the 2025 budget is expected to bolster the government’s efforts in addressing developmental challenges and enhancing service delivery across Niger State.
