A review of the Akwa Ibom State-approved budget document has shown that a sum of N1.2 billion was budgeted by the Governor Umo Eno-led administration for the celebration of the “state creation” anniversary and Independence Day celebration.
According to the budget document, a sum of N700million was budgeted for “Week-long celebration of Akwa Ibom state anniversary celebration.”
The celebration was domiciled under the office of the “Secretary to the State Government.” Akwa Ibom was created on September 23, 1987.

Another sum of N500 million was budgeted for “Independence Day Celebration,” also domiciled under the office of the “Secretary to the State Government. This amount is more than the N611 million budgeted for the College of Nursing Sciences in 2025.
“It is also more than the N360 million budgeted for the state health insurance agency in the 2025 budget document.
The amount is also more than the N1 billion budgeted for the Uyo Capital City Development Authority.
Only N631 million was budgeted for the Akwa Ibom State Water Company in 2025, an amount less than the budget for Independence Day and creation day celebrations, put at N1.2 billion.
19% of school-aged children in Akwa Ibom state are said to be deprived of access to school, according to the National Bureau of Statistics Multidimensional Poverty Index.
70% of households in the state are also said to be deprived of access to sanitary facilities.
Another 64% of households are also said to be deprived of access to clean drinking water.
Akwa Ibom, under Governor Eno who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), also suffers from flooding. In May, 50 houses were said to have been overrun when flooding sacked houses in Akwa Ibom.
