The Federal Government has allocated N8 billion for a nationwide campaign aimed at combating the vandalisation of power infrastructure, which has contributed to frequent blackouts across Nigeria.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this decision on Thursday, January 23, 2025, addressing concerns over the ministry’s budget allocation.
Adelabu emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring stable electricity supply and tackling vandalism that disrupts power distribution.
He clarified that the N8 billion will not be used for sensitising Nigerians to pay electricity bills but for advocacy, education, and deploying technology to protect power infrastructure.
The comprehensive campaign will be implemented across all 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria, involving town hall meetings, engagement with community leaders, and outreach through various media platforms, including radio, television, newspapers, social media, and billboards.
The initiative aims to educate Nigerians about the impacts of vandalism and foster a sense of ownership of power infrastructure as a community asset.
He stated, “Our advocacy will include town hall meetings, engagement with community leaders and stakeholders, and the use of various media platforms—radio, television, newspapers, social media, and billboards.

“The goal is to educate Nigerians on the implications of vandalism and encourage them to see power infrastructure as community assets,” the minister added.
The allocated funds will also support Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects in communities hosting power installations, as well as the hiring of local hunters and security personnel to safeguard power assets.
