Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has told the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio that the people are the government.
Sen. Natasha’s statement is coming over the refusal of Akpabio to rebuild Karu Market which went up in flames, insisting that government cannot build market for the people using government funds.
Recall that on 28 June, a devastating fire outbreak struck the Karu Market in the Federal Capital Territory, leaving a trail of destruction and loss.
In a video on X handle, Senator Ireti Kingibe was seen urging the federal government to rebuild the burnt shops and thereafter offer it up at a cheaper rate to the victims of the fire outbreak instead of dislodging them totally.
Akpabio however stated that the government can’t build a market for the people with government funds.
In a video on X handle, Senator Ireti has expressed, “Karu fire outbreak and the need for safer public places, I urge FVDA and the Abuja Municipal Area Council to offer the shops when rebuilt to the victims at a subsidized and affordable rate in order not to disenfranchise the original owners of the shops, I so submit.”
In response to Ireti’s statement, Akpabio slammed thus, “So why do you use government money to build community market maintain the status and hand it back to the community?.
“So what I’m saying in essence is that the prayer is faulty if there is anybody who wants to second this prayer.”
Sen Natasha Nkpokiti however, stood in defense of Sen Ireti, asking why Akpabio will say the government can’t rebuild the burnt market for the people meanwhile, the people owns both the government and the money.
Natasha reacted thus, “I stand and I speak to second the prayer as amended by Senator Ireti Kingibe .
“If your question has to do with disbursement or the utilization of government funds in rebuilding a community market, sir, the people are the government, the communities are the government.
“So it’s like the people using their money to their own advantage. So I stand to support the motion as amended by Senator Ireti Kingibe sir.”
