A group known as the Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance has expressed its displeasure over the alleged moves to re-arrest and assassinate the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, who was recently released from detention by a court order.

The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Ahmed Yahuza Tanimu, said it was deeply concerned about the safety of Mr Emefiele, who was accused of corruption and financial mismanagement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The group said it believed in the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, and condemned any form of violence or threat against anyone in custody. It also praised the judiciary for ordering the immediate release of Mr Emefiele, saying it was a demonstration of justice and respect for the rule of law.

The group urged the security agencies to exercise restraint and caution in their operations, and to focus on combating the menace of banditry and other criminal activities that endanger the nation’s security. It also called on the media to uphold professional journalistic standards and to report the facts without bias or sensationalism.

The group appealed to the government to listen to the court and respect the law, and to refrain from further attempts to re-arrest or harm Mr Emefiele, who they said had met all the bail conditions set by the court. The group said it was confident that the truth would prevail and that Mr Emefiele would be vindicated.
