GRV Says Forward Thinking Approach Tied To Public Policy, Solution For Lagos Flooding

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, gubernatorial candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 Lagos gubernatorial election, criticized the lame solutions proffered by the Lagos State Government stating that a forward thinking approach is required to stop the flooding in Lagos.

Rhodes while speaking in an interview programme on ChannelTV news on Thursday stated that the Lagos government need to adopt sponge cities initiatives, proper waste management policy, and technology for early warnings, rapid response, and emergency protocols.

In his words, “If you look at places like Netherland, Armsterdan, Japan…these are the people that have seen that they are prone to flooding and they’ve created forward thinking solutions.

“The solutions we’ve seen in this government for the past 24 years have been very pedestrian…You have your gutters, don’t dump refuse in the gutters..but what is your waste management policy?,”he queried.

He continued, ” Having brought it down to local government, how have you created incentive for people to manage their waste because it can be converted to wealth? How have you covered your gutters? How have you localized the management of your deserting and your canal management system? How have you gotten the CDA’s and the local government involved?.”

” We have a situation where local government is extension of political parties. That’s key in the game. You see that normally gutters are cleared in February, March.

“This year we barely saw any of that so when you see these flooding you cannot just say ‘citizenry’. Lagos State has to take water.

“You see, the Netherlands are those low land states, they have a concept of Spondylitis, they have a concept of living with water not fighting water.

” You take it very seriously and that affects your waste management system, it affects your waste line protection policy that is sacrosanct not because you’re Governor’s friend or friend of Governor, you can syphon but demolish other people’s houses”, he added.
