In a recent statement, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, gubernatorial candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 Lagos gubernatorial election, criticized the recent policy decisions announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Rhodes-Vivour commended certain aspects of the measures but highlighted their inadequacy in addressing critical issues facing Lagosians.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s announcements included a 25% reduction in public transportation fares, a plan to feed between 1,000 to 1,500 people daily for 30 to 60 days, and a proposal to reduce the workdays of Lagos civil servants from five days a week to three.
Rhodes-Vivour expressed concerns regarding the potential negative impact of reducing civil servants’ workdays on productivity. He stated, “Reducing working days for civil servants will negatively impact productivity.” Instead, he advocated for wage adjustments to cover inflation, subsidized transportation, and meal tickets at work as more effective measures to support workers and maintain productivity levels.

Regarding the 25% discount on public transportation, Rhodes-Vivour criticized the removal of subsidies on public transportation by the Lagos state government, which exacerbated the cost of living crisis. He emphasized the need for direct intervention by the government in public transportation, suggesting the purchase of CNG-powered buses to be owned and operated by the government and effectively subsidized for citizens.
Rhodes-Vivour acknowledged the government’s acknowledgment of citizens’ challenges but urged it to move beyond tokenism and short-term solutions. He emphasized the importance of sustainably addressing the problems faced by households and businesses in Lagos.
While Rhodes-Vivour’s statements reflect his perspective as a political figure and candidate, they highlight ongoing discussions and debates surrounding the efficacy and scope of government interventions in addressing socio-economic challenges in Lagos state.
