Gunmen Kill Police Officers, Destroy Patrol Vehicle in Imo

On Saturday, in the Okigwe area of Imo State, at least two police officers affiliated with MOPOL 18, Owerri, were tragically killed by assailants.

The perpetrators believed to be associated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its linked organisation, the Eastern Security Network, reportedly hurled explosives at the patrol vehicle and engaged the officers in gunfire along old Gariki Road.

During the confrontation, four other officers sustained severe injuries. Henry Okoye, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating, “The officers were ambushed in the early hours of March 23, 2024, while conducting patrol duties along old Gariki Road, Okigwe, by hostile individuals who launched explosives at the patrol vehicle and initiated a prolonged gun battle.”

“Tragically, two officers lost their lives in the line of duty, while four others managed to survive the assault,” Okoye added.

He further mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, denounced the attack, and both the commissioner and the Commanders of MOPOL 18 and 64 promptly led the command’s Special Tactical Unit to the crime scene for an immediate assessment.
