BREAKING: Hackers Hijack GTBank Website, Intercept Customers’ Data in Massive Phishing Attack

Suspected cybercriminals may have compromised the domain address of Nigeria’s banking giant GTBank.

On Wednesday night, a report revealed that gtbank.com was no longer accessible. This disruption occurred just a day after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029, according to multiple online domain analysis platforms.

No hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which seems to have begun on August 14. A GTBank spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It appears that the attackers have created another HTTP layer of the website, likely in an attempt to steal customers’ data through phishing.

A cybersecurity expert familiar with the Nigerian banking industry suggested that the bank’s login credentials may have been compromised, rather than the domain address being stolen for resale at a higher price online.

GTBank customers have already expressed frustration over the incident, with many taking to the social media platform X to report their inability to access the website for transactions.

Some of the bank’s representatives on X have urged customers to be patient and to direct their requests to a designated channel.

GTBank is one of Nigeria’s largest banks, serving millions of customers in Nigeria and across other African countries.
