Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin has been confirmed dead, his family announced early Sunday.
Fox News reports that the bodies of five other Israelis were also recovered on Saturday.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the six victims were shot by their captors shortly before the IDF arrived.
“A few hours ago, we informed the families that the bodies of their loved ones had been located by IDF troops in an underground tunnel in Rafah,” IDF Spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a statement.
“According to our initial assessment, they were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists shortly before we reached them,” he added.
Goldberg-Polin, 23, was abducted at a music festival in southern Israel during the Hamas attack on October 7.
He suffered severe injuries, including the loss of part of his left arm due to a grenade.
His body was found on Saturday in the tunnels under Rafah, along with five other hostages, after being killed by Hamas.
