Amid widespread economic challenges, Oluremi Tinubu has unveiled the OneNigeria/UnityFabric, which she described as a symbol of national unity.
The first lady announced the unveiling of the ‘Aso Ebi,’ named #OneNigeriaUnityFabric, in a post on her X handle on Tuesday
Miss Mofinyinfoluwa Bamidele, a 25-year-old graduate of the University of Ibadan, designed the winning fabric in a competition organized by the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), chaired by the First Lady. Bamidele received a prize of ₦25 million for her design.
At the unveiling of the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric and the announcement of the competition winner on Monday at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Mrs Tinubu shared that the idea for a national fabric came from her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she saw a similar project.
Mrs Tinubu said the “fabric represents our nation’s unity and was inspired by my visit to Zimbabwe in 2023, where I saw a similar initiative.”
She expressed happiness that her introduction of the idea to the Renewed Hope Initiative had become a reality through the creativity of young Nigerians.
She stated that the design “embodies our diverse culture and will be proudly worn on Independence Day.”
She added that the project is also aimed at supporting “local textile industries, creating jobs, and celebrating Nigeria’s strength as one united nation.”
The next national holiday in the country is October 1 to mark Independence Day.
