The National Action on Sugar Reduction (NASR), a coalition dedicated to combating obesity, has urged for a hike in taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) as a measure to alleviate the obesity epidemic.
Omei Bongos-Ikwue, a spokesperson for NASR, emphasized this demand during a rally held on Saturday in Abuja, coinciding with the observance of the 2024 World Obesity Day, which falls annually on March 4th.
“We urge the government to implement higher taxes on sugary drinks,” said Mr Bongos-Ikwue. “The goal of this pro-health tax is to protect more Nigerians from the risks of obesity, alleviate the burden on the healthcare system, and promote a healthier society.”
He pointed out that statistics indicate one in eight individuals worldwide struggles with obesity.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he noted that 30 percent of Nigerians are overweight, with 15 percent falling into the obese category.
Mr. Bongos-Ikwue emphasized that the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized the obesity crisis as a global issue, affecting over one billion people worldwide.

He explained that excessive calorie consumption is a major contributor to the disease, posing significant health risks.
Furthermore, he stated that sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are the primary source of added sugars in diets and have been scientifically linked to abdominal obesity.
“SSBs are identified as a key driver of cardiometabolic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
“This rally featured an extensive awareness campaign, engaging choreography by volunteers, games, and informative factsheets aimed at enlightening the public,” he stated.
