Social critic Aisha Yesufu has condemned the actions of the Kano State Islamic Police, Hisbah, regarding their handling of the case involving popular Tiktoker, Murja Kunya.
Yesufu criticized Hisbah for what she termed “political sharia” and urged the agency to focus on more pressing issues, such as addressing the plight of children abandoned on the streets.
The statement from Yesufu comes in the wake of a ruling by the Kano High Court, which banned Murja Kunya from appearing on all social media platforms.
Justice Nasiru Saminu delivered the order while ruling on Kunya’s bail application, citing charges related to misdemeanor, improper conduct, and immoral behavior, contrary to Islamic laws of morality.
Murja Kunya had been arrested by Hisbah, charged, and subsequently remanded in prison custody since February 20, 2024.
The judge’s order prohibits Kunya from using social media platforms until the case is resolved, with the Commissioner of Police instructed to arrest her if she violates the ban.
Many observers have criticized the ruling as a violation of Kunya’s fundamental right to free speech.
Aisha Yesufu echoed these sentiments, questioning why Hisbah is focusing on Kunya when there are more urgent issues, such as child welfare and support, that demand attention.
In a post on her official X handle, Yesufu expressed her disappointment with Hisbah’s priorities, stating, “Hisbah should be ashamed of itself and the political sharia it practices. Children are roaming the streets abandoned by their parents and that is not the focus of Hisbah. Neither are they focused on child support that is not being paid. It is Murja that is their problem,” she added.
