Hoodlums Beat LG Chairman to Pulp Over N1m Campaign Loan in Niger

Following an alleged failure to settle a debt exceeding N1 million, Danlamin Abdullahi Saku, Chairman of the Katcha local government area in Niger State, was attacked and beaten by hoodlums within the council.

According to DAILY POST, the LG chairman borrowed the money from Alhaji Yanda, a resident of the same area, and failed to repay it. The incident occurred on Sunday when Alhaji Yanda sent a group of boys to demand repayment from the chairman.

Instead of addressing the message, Saku reportedly slapped one of the boys, leading to a fight in which he was severely beaten. The chairman was subsequently rushed to the General Hospital Katcha and later transferred to an undisclosed hospital for further medical attention.

A local party source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the attackers were supporters of the chairman’s own party. They were upset over his failure to repay the N1 million debt, which was borrowed to fund his successful campaign for the council chairmanship. Prior to the attack, the chairman’s vehicle had been seized by his creditors and was only returned after interventions from party leaders.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that on June 16, 2024, information was received at Katcha Division regarding the attack on Hon. Danlami Abdullahi Saku by miscreants near Saku-Gaza village following Sallah prayers.

“The attack was reportedly linked to a debt issue between the Chairman and Alhaji Yanda,” Abiodun said. He added that the Chairman sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to General Hospital Bida before being referred to another hospital.

“Preliminary investigations are ongoing at Katcha Division, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend those responsible for the assault and grievous harm inflicted on the Chairman,” Abiodun further stated.
