The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has slammed Bola Tinubu’s administration for its proposed N10 billion solar power project for the Presidential Villa, describing it as a blatant admission of the failure of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
HURIWA argued that the high cost of switching the Villa to solar energy reveals the Federal Government’s awareness that electricity tariffs imposed by Distribution Companies (DisCos) are unsustainable and exploitative.
The group condemned the Presidency’s defence of the project—especially its comparison to the White House’s solar initiative—as evidence of misplaced priorities.

In a country where millions still lack reliable electricity, HURIWA described the move as “selfish,” stating: “This project is not just a failure of leadership but a clear confession that the national grid is broken.

The claim that over 150 million Nigerians now enjoy regular electricity is a blatant lie.”
HURIWA also knocked the current electricity pricing model, particularly the controversial Band classifications, likening them to Hushpuppi-style advance fee fraud.
The planned solar system is expected to supply uninterrupted power to the President’s residence, administrative buildings, and other vital parts of the State House, with the Presidency touting long-term cost savings and energy efficiency.
While some Nigerians have welcomed the environmental benefits of the move, many others have raised concerns about its financial burden, especially amid worsening economic conditions across the country.
