The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Owoade, has asserted his historical and cultural authority, stating that he is the first “Kabiyesi” in Yorubaland, tracing the title’s origin to Alaafin Sango, one of the most revered rulers in Oyo’s history.
Speaking in a recent video on X, Oba Owoade affirmed that he is the veritable custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, stressing his commitment to preserving the heritage and welfare of his people.

He traced the historical transition of the Yoruba legacy, emphasising that Alaafin Sango, the third Alaafin after Oranmiyan and Ajaka, was a courageous warrior whose leadership brought peace to Oyo and Yorubaland.
He said, “Alaafin Sango is a brave man, a great warrior. Through his effort, there was peace in Oyo and Yorubaland during his time. Everything he says is final. This commanded a lot of respect for him. No one can dare cross the line before him.”
He continued, “As people continue to praise the Alaafin as Kabiyesi, we extract ‘Kabiyesi’ today from the reverence and authority Sango commanded.”
The statement comes amid a fresh dispute between the Alaafin and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.
The conflict began last Monday after the Alaafin criticised the Ooni’s decision to confer the title of Okanlomo of Oduwa on businessman Dotun Sanusi during the unveiling of an indigenous social media platform, 2geda, at Ilaji Hotel in Ibadan over the weekend.
Oba Owoade’s remarks underline the weight of tradition and the historical significance of Alaafin Sango’s reign, which continues to influence contemporary Yoruba rulership and the respect accorded to monarchs in the region.
