A 1997 interview published by ThisDay newspaper has resurfaced, showing Bola Ahmed Tinubu declaring that he did not believe in “One Nigeria.”
The statement, made while Tinubu was in exile during the regime of General Sani Abacha, appeared in the April 13, 1997 Sunday Politics section of ThisDay.

The interview, conducted by journalist Ayo Arowolaju, captured the then-senator’s views on Nigeria’s political structure and the challenges facing the nation’s unity under military rule.
The resurfaced publication has triggered widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians revisiting Tinubu’s earlier stance against the backdrop of his current role as the country’s leader.
On X (formerly Twitter), user @kpuraAraba described the headline as a “serious sore thumb for Tinubu,” arguing that he has “proven that right, in all ramifications.”
Another user, @DankallahNura, wrote: “He said it with one mind, so I believe up till now he remains on his word. Na only God Almighty can save us from this man.”
Similarly, @obonguby commented that Tinubu’s greatest achievement would be to “give us restructuring,” adding that, “nothing stops nigeria remaining a nation but with control over our natural resources and those that want jihadist killing them could continue together. Enough of some regions feeding big from others.”
