Victor Osimhen has revealed that he will continue wearing a protective mask throughout his career due to safety concerns.
The Nigerian striker suffered a severe facial injury during a Serie A match against Inter Milan on November 21, 2021, in a collision with Milan Skriniar.
Returning to the pitch with a distinctive protective mask, Osimhen has embraced it as a trademark, gaining popularity among Napoli fans.
Currently representing the Super Eagles at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, Osimhen emphasized the necessity of the mask for his safety.
In an interview with Brilla FM, he explained the ongoing danger, recounting a recent match against Cagliari where he sustained a bloody face, even with the mask on, after a collision with the opposition goalkeeper.
Osimhen clarified that the mask is indispensable because he has screws that pass through his jaws and face, a condition he will carry throughout his career.
“I have to wear the mask for the rest of my career because I have screws that actually pass through my jaws and face. I still have them till now,” he said.
“The last match I played against Cagliari — when I headed the ball, I had blood on my face, and the goalkeeper also hit my face, and there was blood that was even with the mask on.
“So it is really dangerous for me to play without using the mask, of course.”
