Afrobeats superstar Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that he was not proud to be Nigerian when he was growing up.
In a recent interview, the Grammy-winning artist revealed that he was never proud to be a Nigerian, describing the experience as something that “wasn’t worth it” during his younger years.
While reflecting on his time growing up in the United Kingdom, Burna Boy said being Nigerian was often met with ridicule and shame.

“I wasn’t proud to be Nigerian, bro. It wasn’t really a proud thing to be,” he said.
According to him, the perception of Nigerians abroad made it difficult for him to embrace his roots, leading him to emotionally detach from anything connected to Nigeria. “I didn’t care about anything Nigerian like that,” he added.

While his comments have drawn mixed reactions, some say his experience mirrors the reality faced by some Nigerians in the diaspora.
Despite his past detachment, Burna Boy has since become a vocal advocate for African pride, using his music and global influence to spotlight Nigeria and its rich cultural identity on the world stage.
