Amid shifting political currents ahead of the 2027 presidential race, former Jigawa State Governor and top PDP stalwart Sule Lamido has hinted at backing Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, if a united opposition front rallies behind him.
Lamido, while reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP, said the country’s worsening condition demands a shift from traditional political divisions to credible leadership, regardless of region.

“If the coalition produces Peter Obi or anyone else committed to rescuing Nigeria, I will support them. But I remain PDP. We should have outgrown tribal and regional sentiments,” he stated.
He stressed that political leadership must no longer be framed through the narrow lens of zoning, especially since the practice had outlived the purpose it was designed to serve.
According to him, the PDP’s zoning principle was originally introduced as a temporary solution to calm national tensions following the annulled June 12, 1993, election. “It was meant to be a healing mechanism, a temporary measure to restore trust. But now, it has become an albatross,” Lamido explained.

Taking a jab at the North’s political dominance over the years, Lamido questioned the tangible gains of such supremacy, given the region’s enduring poverty and insecurity. “What has the North gained from producing the most presidents if the region remains underdeveloped?” he asked pointedly.
He reiterated that Nigeria’s immediate task is to remove the APC from power, adding, “Leadership should be about competence and vision, not geography. I’m open to any arrangement that can confront the APC and rescue Nigeria. I’ll support those who share that goal.”
Lamido’s comments signal a potential turning point in northern elite political opinion, particularly amid growing public fatigue with Tinubu’s underperforming administration and a volatile national mood.
