IBB’s Confession on June 12 is Insulting, Absolute Rubbish — Archbishop Chukwuma

Retired Archbishop of Enugu Province (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, has criticised former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), over his recent confession regarding the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election, describing it as an insult to Nigerians.

Speaking in Enugu, Chukwuma also called on the Federal Government to posthumously honour the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), who conducted the historic election annulled by Babangida. Nwosu passed away on October 24, 2024, and is set to be buried on March 28.

The cleric lamented that despite Nwosu’s role in organizing what is regarded as Nigeria’s most credible election, he was never recognized, while other key figures such as MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe were honoured.

Chukwuma stated, “Now, Humphrey Nwosu is dead, and it has been acknowledged that he conducted Nigeria’s most credible election, yet no national honour was given to him. Kingibe was honoured, Abiola was honoured, but the man who conducted the election was ignored. Nigeria has been unfair to Humphrey Nwosu.”

He urged the government to name a national monument after Nwosu and ensure it plays a role in his burial.

Reacting to Babangida’s remarks in his newly launched book, where he admitted that Abiola won the election, Chukwuma dismissed the confession as unacceptable.

“All that Babangida said in his book, regretting or confessing that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election, is absolute rubbish! It is a great disappointment and an insult to Nigerians.

“If I had my way, IBB should be jailed for making such a statement after taking the entire country for a ride.”

He further condemned Babangida’s justification for annulling the election, calling it a falsehood and insisting that Nigerians are still suffering from the consequences of bad leadership.

“Nigerians are suffering today because of bad leadership, and we still cannot conduct a credible election. Babangida’s confession comes too late—after the deaths of Abiola and Nwosu. He must apologize to their families and to the Nigerian people,” he added.
