IGP Wades into Rivers Crisis, Threatens Force of the Law on Combatants

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the recent violence in Rivers State that led to the deaths of Inspector David Mgbada, a Police officer, and Samuel Nwigwe, a vigilante operative.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday during a clash between supporters of the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The dispute was over the tenure of the 23 local government chairmen.

Reacting to the violence, the IGP, through a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, directed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olatunji Disu, to increase security measures throughout the state. The police chief also ordered a thorough investigation into the deaths and the general unrest.

“The IGP warned individuals and groups of people who have a penchant for senseless attacks and mindless killings of police officers and other security operatives across the country to desist forthwith as the fullest force of the law will be meted on them,” the statement said.

To bolster the investigation and ensure swift justice, the IGP deployed operatives from the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to assist the Rivers State Command in apprehending the killers of the police officer and the vigilante member.

IGP Egbetokun’s statement serves as a stern warning to those who engage in violence against security personnel. He emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated and that the law will take its full course against perpetrators. The IGP’s decisive measures aim to restore peace and order in Rivers State, highlighting the police force’s commitment to maintaining security and protecting the lives of both officers and civilians.
