AFCON 2023: ‘I’ll Play Despite My Injury’, Troost-Ekong Expresses Optimism Ahead Angola Clash

William Troost-Ekong, a key player in the Super Eagles defense, has responded to widespread claims suggesting he sustained an injury during the Round of 16 game against Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The rumors also hinted at doubts about his availability for the upcoming quarterfinal clash against Angola.

Despite the victory against Cameroon with a score of 2-0 last Saturday, Troost-Ekong, along with Victor Osimhen, was notably absent from the Super Eagles’ recovery session on Monday, sparking speculations regarding their fitness.

In response to the speculations, Troost-Ekong clarified that he is prepared to start in the quarterfinal match against Angola if selected by manager Jose Peseiro.

“You are going to see a team as motivated as we have been for the whole tournament,” he told reporters in Abidjan.

“Our message has stayed the same throughout. We’re going to be trying to improve on what we did. It’s going to be a tough game.

“I’m struggling with a small injury since the Ivory Coast game so I’m just trying to manage myself. But I’ll be ready to play on Friday if the coach selects me.”
