A 24-year-old man named Taiwo Kayode has been handed a 10-year prison sentence by a special cultism court in Abeokuta for illegal possession of firearms.
The presiding magistrate, Mr. O.L. Oke, stated that the prosecution had convincingly proven its case. He affirmed that the evidence put forth was credible, leading to the defendant’s conviction on a two-count charge. The magistrate imposed a 10-year sentence for the first count and a 5-year sentence for the second count, with no option for a fine. However, he ruled that the sentences would run simultaneously.
The police had indicted the 24-year-old convict for illegal possession of firearms and live ammunition.
The prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings, informed the court that the defendant had committed the offences on September 7 on Agura Road, Sabo, Sagamu, Ogun State. Rawlings disclosed that the defendant was found in possession of a locally made double-barrel shotgun and a cartridge without a legal permit.

He said, “The defendant was accosted by a team of stop-and-search police officers, and he could not give any reason why he was with a gun and a live cartridge.”
Rawlings pointed out that the offences were in violation of Section 27(a) of the Firearms Act, Cap F28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. (NAN)
