The Police Command in Cross River, Nigeria, has uncovered an illegal factory producing guns and explosives in the Osomba community in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.
The operation, led by SP Ogini Chukwuma of the command’s Anti Cultism and Kidnapping Squad, lasted four hours and resulted in the recovery of remote-controlled Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs), detonators, and several automatic weapons.
The factory was found to be producing dozens of locally made double barrel guns and pistols. Nine suspects were apprehended at the factory, who were known as “gun runners”.
The command spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, described this as a “pure act of terrorism” and a “huge breakthrough for the command”. The discovery of this illegal arms factory is a significant step towards curbing the proliferation of arms and ammunition in the region.
The police are currently conducting further investigations to uncover any potential networks or individuals linked to this illegal operation.
