In a shocking development, Smith Chiedoziem Anyanwu, the ward chairman for Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze Ward of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ezinihitte Mbaise council area, Imo, has been reportedly murdered.
The incident was confirmed by the party’s director of new media, Lancelot Obiaku, in Owerri on Friday.
According to reports, the assailants, who were two in number and rode on a motorbike, killed Anyanwu in the presence of his wife.
They reportedly asked his wife for him, and upon identifying him, they fired several shots at him, leaving only after confirming his death.
The murder of the ward chairman has sent shockwaves through the PDP family and the local community. This incident comes on the heels of the party’s defeat in the November 11, 2023, governorship election in the state, adding to the gloom surrounding the party.
Interestingly, an unnamed party woman had allegedly threatened to harm Anyanwu following the recent governorship election in Imo. However, the circumstances surrounding the murder remain unclear, and no further comments have been made by the party’s Director of New Media.

As at press time, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, has not responded to inquiries about the incident.
