The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has shared his thoughts after participating in the recently concluded Ghanaian election
The election which was held on Saturday produced John Mahama as the President of Ghana with no record of killings, rigging or vote buying.
In an interview with Arise TV, Mahmood described the election as an interesting one and further highlighted some of things he observed from the election.
His words,”It was a very interesting election. We came here as part of ECOWAS network of electoral commission with colleagues from Sierra Leone and Liberia and also colleagues from the southern African region and there is a gracious concession on the part of the other candidate of the main party.
“We’re grateful that it went very well but the process is still on, the election has not been announced by the electoral commission so we’ll go and continuously support our colleague in the electoral commission but we’re very happy with this positive outcome.

“There are many things I observed, the first thing is the political parties. One of the lessons I think I learnt from this election is the fact that the main opposition candidate was vice president and the president of Republic of Ghana lost election on two different occasions is now third time lucky and the candidate of the ruling party has also been in the same party, who has been in and out of power for a long time.
“Rarely in Ghana, people moving from one party to another with every general election. So that is important, it provides stability and also provide their supporters stability .
So there are people who support political parties for many many years so whether the party is in power or position, they stick to the political party.
“The second thing for me is the lesson that Ghana also learnt from Nigeria in the area of managing constituency electorate house.
“Until the last election in Ghana, all result come to the headquarters in Accra, that is parliamentary and presidential although that is not their system but they learnt from Nigerians that’s where they have the returning officers that announce results for parliamentary elections in the various constituencies that are in the country.
“Only the presidential results come to Accra, so in Nigeria, this is what we have done and they borrowed a leave from us and this is the second time they’re implementing that. That’s why you can see the declaration of presidential election results was a lot faster than it use to be in the past,” he added.
