INEC Denies Involvement in Enugu Rerun Election Fraud, Says Man Caught Not Employee

INEC Alleged Employee and Fake Result

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the allegations that one of its staff was caught with a pre-filled result sheet for the rerun election in Enugu State on Saturday.

In a tweet posted on its official handle, INEC said the person in question was not an employee of the Commission and was unknown to it. The Commission urged the public to disregard the false report, which it described as a fake narrative circulating on social media.

The tweet was in response to an earlier report of a man who claimed to be an INEC official being beaten up by angry voters in Enugu for bringing a pre-filled result sheet to a polling unit. The report also alleged that the man confessed to being sent by a politician to rig the election.

However, INEC said the report was baseless and fabricated, and that it had nothing to do with the incident. The Commission also said it had suspended the rerun elections in some constituencies in Enugu, Kano, and Akwa Ibom states due to disruptions, irregularities, and abduction of election officials.

The rerun elections were held in 28 federal and state constituencies across 11 states, following court orders that nullified the results of the 2023 general elections in those areas. The elections were marred by violence, low turnout, and logistical challenges in some places.
