INEC Gets 14-Day Ultimatum for By-Elections After 27 Lawmakers Defect in Rivers State -NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a 14-day ultimatum to conduct bye-elections for the 27 vacant constituencies in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

This demand comes in the wake of the mass defection of 27 lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Daniel Okwa, convener of the NDC, expressed concerns about the potential impact on democracy during a press conference today.

Okwa, referring to Section 109 (g) of the Nigerian Constitution, stressed that the defectors have effectively relinquished their seats, necessitating fresh elections.

He warned that the actions of the 27 lawmakers constitute a “breach of the Constitution” and insisted they must vacate their positions.

The NDC also cautioned INEC to strictly adhere to legal requirements in conducting the by-elections, asserting that citizens will take legal action against the electoral body if it fails to comply.

“The President should tell Wike and the former lawmakers in clear terms that he cannot be associated or seen to be encouraging this shenanigans,” the group asserted.
