I Inherited N359 Billion Salary Arrears from Ex-Gov Ortom — Governor Alia Claims Previous Administration Lied About Federal Funds

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has revealed that his administration inherited over N359 billion in salary arrears accumulated over several years from the previous administration led by Governor Samuel Ortom.

Governor Alia made this disclosure on Monday during a thank-you tour of the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency at Okpoga, the headquarters of Okpokwu Local Government Area.

Governor Alia accused previous administrations of misleading the public by claiming that the federal government had denied them funds to pay salaries.

He assured that his administration would prioritize the timely payment of workers’ salaries, announcing that henceforth, civil servants in the state would receive their salaries from the 22nd of every month.

He stated, “Henceforth, civil servants in the state will be paid from 22nd of every month.”

Alia expressed gratitude to the people for their trust in his leadership and pledged to revive the Igumale Cement Factory and improve infrastructure, including the construction of access roads.

“Okpoga is in darkness; I will light it up with 5,000 kw of electricity. I have come to reduce your pain and suffering,“ he added.

He urged continued support for his administration and patience with Chief Bola Tinubu, stating that the he has beneficial policies for Nigerians.

Earlier at the event, Daniel Onjeh, a former senatorial candidate under the All Progressives Congress (APC), called on Governor Alia to fulfill his campaign promises amidst criticism from opposition parties.

Onjeh articulated, “The opposition is asking what you have done for Benue South. We want to see things manifest. Do not be distracted by the blackmail of the opposition.”

In addition, Benjamin Omakolon, the acting chairman of the APC, welcomed 500 defectors from opposition parties to the APC, promising them equal treatment within the party.
