Prosecutors in Germany have suspected that an inmate killed his wife during a prison visit at Burg Prison in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt.
The incident occurred on Thursday in one of the facility’s long-term visitor spaces, which are designed to allow unsupervised meetings between inmates and their families.
According to authorities, the 37-year-old prisoner was alone with his 35-year-old wife when the attack happened. She was later found dead, prompting an investigation into the case on suspicion of homicide.

Public prosecutors in the city of Stendal have since filed charges of manslaughter against the inmate.

They noted that the prison’s long-term visitor rooms are intended to foster privacy for inmates and their families, which means visits are neither surveilled nor directly supervised.
However, an autopsy has been ordered to determine cause of death.
Burg Prison, a maximum-security facility built in 2009, is the largest correctional facility in Saxony-Anhalt, housing up to 650 male inmates.
The incident has raised concerns over security measures within the prison’s visitation system.
