A group of passengers travelling along Akure/ lkere highway were reportedly abducted by gunmen on Thursday night.
The incident came to light on Friday morning when two bullet-riddled vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a white Highlander, were found abandoned on the highway near Iju.
The number of victims is still unknown, as no official report has been made by the families of the vehicle owners or any missing persons in the state.
The police have confirmed the incident and deployed the anti-kidnapping section of the command to search the forest in lkere, Ekiti state and Akure, in Ondo state.
The police image maker, Funmi Odunlami, told newsmen in Akure that the state police command would soon unravel what took place and rescue the victims if it was a case of abduction.
She also said that it was not clear whether the kidnappers had contacted the family members for ransom.
A video of the scene of the incident has been circulating on social media, showing the two vehicles with multiple bullet holes.
A source in the area said that the gunmen intercepted the vehicles and forced the drivers to stop. He said that the kidnappers might have marched the passengers into the bush.
“We’ve reported the incident to the police in the area and they had visited the scene of the incident but we’ve not heard anything from them since,” the source said.
