Security forces have intensified their presence in the remote communities of Woro and Nuku in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara following a brutal terrorist attack on Tuesday evening that claimed at least 40 lives, with fears the toll could rise further as recovery operations continue.
The terrorists, believed to have crossed from forest hideouts in neighboring Niger State, stormed the communities around dusk, unleashing indiscriminate gunfire on residents and setting multiple homes and structures ablaze.
Eyewitness accounts indicate the attackers first attempted to address a gathering of locals, insisting they reject the Nigerian constitution and adopt the Qur’an as the sole basis of governance.
When met with resistance, the terrorists opened fire, targeting civilians—including women and children—while torching buildings in a rampage that lasted several hours.
“The angry terrorists opened fire indiscriminately on the congregation, and no fewer than 40 residents of the two communities died; a few of them escaped,” a local source recounted to journalists, speaking under condition of anonymity amid ongoing trauma and security concerns.
Initial reports late Tuesday placed the fatalities around 10, but the number climbed steadily overnight as more bodies were discovered in homes, surrounding bushes, and escape routes.
In the aftermath, soldiers from the Nigerian Army and operatives from the Forest Guards have fully secured Woro and Nuku, establishing control to protect survivors, facilitate search-and-rescue efforts, and deter any potential follow-up incursions.
The deployment reflects heightened alertness in Kwara North, a region long plagued by cross-border terrorist activity exploiting vast, ungoverned forest reserves.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq condemned the massacre in strong terms, labeling it a desperate and cowardly act by terrorist elements reeling from recent military successes in dismantling their networks across the north-central zone.
In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor extended condolences to bereaved families and reiterated the administration’s full support for federal security operations.
“The governor mourns deeply with the people of Woro and Nuku, especially families who lost loved ones—including vulnerable women and children—in this horrific assault,” the statement noted.
“This appears to be a frustrated response by terrorist cells to the ongoing counter-terrorism campaigns and the successes recorded so far in hunting down terrorist and kidnapping gangs in parts of the state.”
The attack has reignited concerns over the vulnerability of border communities in Kaiama LGA, where terrorists have repeatedly exploited porous frontiers and dense vegetation for staging raids.
Local leaders have renewed calls for improved intelligence coordination, permanent security outposts, and community-based early-warning systems to prevent future tragedies.
As grief grips the affected areas and displaced residents begin assessing the widespread destruction, the reinforced military and Forest Guard presence provides a fragile sense of security.
