Iranian Film Director Dariush Mehrjui and Wife Murdered

State media reported that acclaimed Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were found fatally murdered in their home.

Mona Mehrjui, the daughter of the couple, was at her father’s house in a suburb some 30 kilometres west of Tehran on Saturday night when she found the bodies. Both individuals had neck injuries from knives.

Authorities in Iran are looking into the situation right now. The official IRNA news agency did not speculate on a motive, but it was said that Mohammadifar had recently complained about a knife threat on social media.

A co-founder of Iran’s new wave of realistic cinema in the early 1970s, Mehrjui, 83, is known for his work. He won numerous honours, including a 1993 Golden Seashell at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and a 1998 Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival. Early in the 1960s, Mehrjui attended the University of California, Los Angeles, to pursue a degree in cinema.

The film industry is in shock and grieving as a result of this awful tragedy. Fans and coworkers from all around the world are paying tribute to Mehrjui’s important career and expressing sympathy for his family’s loss as the inquiry goes on.
