An Iraqi court has sentenced nine drug dealers to death on charges of drug trafficking, the Supreme Judicial Council announced on Wednesday.
The Central Criminal Court issued the verdict after authorities seized 186 kilograms of various drugs, according to the council’s statement.
Iraq has struggled to combat drug-related crimes due to years of instability following the U.S. invasion in 2003.

In May 2023, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani emphasised the need to intensify waging “a war on drugs.” He described it as a key source of funding for terrorism.
He noted that the circulation of drugs thrives in environments affected by terrorism, further complicating security challenges in the country.
