Israel’s Netanyahu Bows to Pressure, Apologises to Qatar Over Hamas Attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has apologised to Qatar for an airstrike on Hamas leaders in Doha that killed a Qatari guard and violated the Gulf state’s sovereignty.

The apology came during a Monday telephone call made from the White House to Qatar’s prime minister, according to a diplomat who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.

The strike, carried out on September 9 in a residential district of Doha, had targeted Hamas leaders who were set to review a United States ceasefire proposal in Gaza.

Netanyahu had initially defended the operation and remained unrepentant in the days after the attack.

However, US President Donald Trump, who maintains close ties with Qatar, expressed displeasure over the strike.

Trump has since renewed his efforts to secure a truce in Gaza, amid tensions sparked by the Israeli action.
