Atiku Abubakar, the presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the use of live ammunition by security forces against citizens participating in peaceful protests in Kano and Abuja.
Atiku who describe the act as “heinous” and reminiscent of the oppressive tactics used during Nigeria’s military dictatorship, has he expressed his strong disapproval of the government’s response to demonstrations calling for improved governance.
In his statement, Atiku underscored the responsibility of the government and security agencies to ensure a safe environment for citizens to exercise their right to protest without fear.
He criticized the use of force against peaceful protesters, which he believes only exacerbates tensions and disrupts non-violent demonstrations.
Atiku has called on international community, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to closely monitor the situation in Nigeria and hold the country’s leadership and security forces accountable for their actions.
Moreso, he urged protesters to continue their demonstrations peacefully and reject any forms of violence. As he condemned those who engage in looting and the destruction of property, arguing that such actions undermine legitimate protests and play into the hands of those opposed to the right to protest.
However, Atiku call on Bola Tinubu to demonstrate true leadership by addressing and implementing the demands of the Nigerian people.
He asserted that genuine leadership involves responding to public grievances rather than suppressing the right to protest.
