I’ve Reinstated Myself as Lagos Assembly Speaker – Obasa

Mudashiru Obasa revealed on Thursday that he has resumed his role as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He made this announcement upon returning to the parliament for the first time since his removal on January 13.

“I’ve resumed and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Mr Obasa said after storming the parliament with police and State Security Service detail.

The circumstances surrounding the politician’s decision were unclear. On January 13, he was impeached by a decisive majority of lawmakers in Lagos and succeeded by Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

Despite her appointment, Ms. Meranda has been unable to fully take charge of the parliament for several weeks. Notably, no new leadership vote was conducted to restore Mr. Obasa as Speaker. He has challenged his removal in court, but a ruling on the matter is still pending.

This development is the latest twist in the ongoing political turmoil that has gripped the Lagos Assembly for weeks—a surprising situation in a state known for its tradition of political unity.

Efforts to reach Ms. Meranda for comment on Thursday afternoon were unsuccessful.
