Ahead of the release, the board also shared preliminary statistics detailing how the 1.9 million candidates fared. The figures paint a worrying picture: over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks, falling short of the commonly accepted average score.

The UTME tests students in four key subjects, with Use of English compulsory for all candidates, who also select three other subjects aligned with their intended fields of study.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reacted to the grim numbers, defending the outcome as proof of the administration’s crackdown on malpractice. “The high failure rate in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is clear evidence that the government’s anti malpractice measures are yielding results, especially within the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board system,” he said.
