Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has reacted to the recent wave of defections by state governors and political figures to the ruling party, describing it as a desperate but futile move to retain power.
Yesufu, who made the statement on X (formerly Twitter), argued that political realignments have historically failed to prevent electoral defeat for ruling parties, citing the fall of a previous administration that once boasted of “60 years in power.”

“Governors have always decamped to the ruling party. It didn’t stop a party that was so sure of 60 years of power from being defeated, and neither will it stop this current illegitimate ruling party from being defeated,” she said.
Her comment comes amid growing political manoeuvring and defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several opposition figures reportedly aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Many Nigerians view her remarks as a reflection of deepening public anger toward politicians who see defection not as a matter of principle, but as a means of political survival.
In response to Yesufu’s post, an X user, @adeoyeomoba13, wrote:
“Nigerians rejected PDP, and they will also chase out APC. It’s a matter of time. No dictator can rule forever.”
