Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a quiet political move that is already sparking speculation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sambo, who served as vice president under Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015, reportedly completed his defection through the Kaduna State chapter of the APC. The development was confirmed on Wednesday by party member Imran Muhammad via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Another major political shift, this time, from the very top,” Imran wrote. “Former Nigerian Vice President Namadi Sambo has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Although Sambo has yet to issue a public statement on the switch, political analysts say the defection could trigger ripple effects within Northern political circles and alter the balance of power in Kaduna State and beyond.
The PDP, which has been struggling with internal divisions and a string of defections, may see Sambo’s exit as a significant blow, especially given his former stature as a top-ranking member of the party.

His quiet entry into the APC adds to the growing list of political heavyweights aligning with the ruling party, which many see as part of the APC’s long-term consolidation strategy ahead of the next general elections.
Questions are already being raised about what Sambo’s move signals about the viability of the PDP and the realignments likely to shape Nigeria’s political landscape over the next two years.
As of press time, neither the PDP nor Sambo has issued an official reaction to the development.
