In anticipation of the impending nationwide strike scheduled for Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called for an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
In the meeting, the organized labour will assess the strategies and preparations for the forthcoming strike in the wake of the recent attack on NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero.
Also, they will reevaluate the Memorandum of Understanding inked between the Federal Government and Organized Labor on October 2, 2023, a document that emerged subsequent to the discontinuation of fuel subsidies.
In a statement released on Tuesday, TUC’s National Vice President, Tommy Etim, revealed the summoning of the emergency meeting.

The labor unions had issued a five-day ultimatum on Friday last week, setting the stage for their protest against the arrest of Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State.
Central to their demands is the immediate reassignment of the state’s commissioner of police and the apprehension and prosecution of an aide to the governor allegedly involved in the assault.
Should their stipulations remain unaddressed within the designated five-day period, the labor unions have threatened to initiate a nationwide strike.
The arrest of Joe Ajaero by the police ahead of the statewide demonstration in Imo on Wednesday has further fueled tensions and added urgency to their cause.
