JUST IN: Supreme Court Schedules Thursday To Decide Obi, Atiku Appeals

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is scheduled to deliver judgment on the appeals submitted by the Presidential Candidates of the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, contesting Bola Tinubu’s win in the 2023 presidential election on Thursday, October 26, 2023.

The announcement of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor of the presidential election on February 25 has been contested by Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In their appeals, the appellants have brought up a number of grounds, including the eligibility of Vice President Kashim Shettima and Tinubu’s candidatures.

In an earlier ruling, the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja determined that both Atiku and Mr. Obi had not provided sufficient evidence to support their individual allegations of widespread electoral malpractices committed by Nigeria’s electoral agency, INEC.

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) submitted a second petition, which the court denied due to the suit’s lack of validity.

In an effort to have the court verify the legitimacy of Tinubu’s academic credentials from Chicago State University, Atiku has already submitted the president’s educational records to the court.

In court documents, Atiku and Mr. Obi’s petitions, according to Tinubu’s main attorney, Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), are without merit.

However, Justice Inyang Okoro will preside over a seven-member Supreme Court panel that will make the decision on the appellant cases.
