Kaduna Assembly Assumes Control of LG Legislative Functions, Suspends Eight Councilors

Following the ongoing crisis in the Kagarko local government area, the Kaduna State House of Assembly has stepped in to assume legislative duties in the troubled region.

The move comes in the aftermath of an unresolved conflict, leading to significant actions against key local government figures.

In a decisive move, the House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended eight councillors from Kagarko.

The affected individuals, including Danjuma Padalo, Adamu Abdulaziz, Livinus Makama, Samson Hazo, Amos Egoh, Idris Abubakar, Zakaria Musa, and Rabo Musa, now face suspension for reasons tied to the controversial impeachment of Nasara Rabo, the Council Chairman.

The suspension stems from the councillors’ alleged involvement in the illegal impeachment of Rabo, marked by a lack of due process and gross violations of office protocols.

The councillors took this action on November 2, 2023, while the Ad-hoc Committee of the 10th Assembly was investigating allegations of financial misappropriation against the Council Chairman.

In a surprising turn of events, a letter dated November 3, 2023, from the Clerk of the Assembly, Sakinatu Idris, called for the immediate reinstatement of Rabo, citing a lack of merit in the charges against him.

The source revealed that the councillors’ desperation led them to ignore impeachment guidelines and deny a fair hearing in the process.

Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, the 10th Assembly, through the clerk of the Kaduna House, issued a letter on November 20, 2023.

The letter, addressed to the Commissioner of the Ministry for Local Government Affairs and the reinstated Chairman, ordered the indefinite suspension of the eight councillors.

The suspension, based on the oversight function of the Ad-Hoc Committee on Local Government, prohibits the councillors from the vicinity of the Secretariat pending further investigation.

Furthermore, the letter directed the Ministry to inform the affected councillors of Kagarko Local Government and the Local Government Service Board about the development.

The Ministry was also instructed not to engage the suspended councillors in any official activities pending the completion of the investigation.

As a final measure, the councillors are mandated to surrender all government properties and documents in their possession to the clerk of the Legislative Council until further notice.#Kaduna
