Kanayo O. Kanayo, a renowned Nollywood actor, and musician Mike Okri have criticized the Federal Government’s recent directive to eliminate smoking and ritual scenes from films, calling the move a “joke.”
During a summit held on Wednesday in Enugu State, stakeholders were informed by Shaibu Husseini, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Film and Video Censors Board, that the federal government had sanctioned a ban on scenes depicting money rituals, smoking, and other vices that glamorize crime in Nollywood movies.
Husseini stated that the government had approved the prohibition of money rituals, ritual killings, and the promotion and display of tobacco, tobacco products, and nicotine products in movies, music videos, and skits.

According to Vanguard, Kanayo O. Kanayo labeled the move as “sensible nonsense,” criticizing the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, for approving what he considered a stifling measure against filmmakers.
Similarly, Mike Okri called the federal government’s action a joke, suggesting it was an attempt to silence the movie industry.
“Whoever is behind this from the FG is joking. It’s a way to silence the movie industry. They should focus on the real challenges facing the country,” Okri said.
