The planned rally and protest by supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State have been shelved, according to a report by Daily Trust.
The two political parties had set Saturday for their respective gatherings following the Appeal Court’s judgment which sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and declared the APC’s candidate, Dr Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, as the winner of the March 18 election in the state.
However, both parties have now called off their plans, citing security concerns.
The Kano State Police Command had also warned against any attempt by any person or group of persons to stage any public procession, protest, as well as a rally.
The decision to shelve the rally and protest comes amidst a heavy security presence across the metropolis of Kano State. Security operatives have been stationed around strategic locations in the state, especially the metropolis, and others are roving around major streets.
The NNPP’s state chairman, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, had earlier denied plans for any protest, but some groups of supporters had insisted on going ahead with it. However, the party’s leadership has now directed them to put a halt to the exercise and remain calm.
The APC’s Gawuna/Garo Campaign Organisation had also planned a mass rally on Saturday, but it too has been shelved. An aide to Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Mansur Haruna Dandago, said that the party has shelved the plan “looking at the issues of security of properties and lives that are at stake.”
