The Kano Division of the Court of Appeal is set to hear the appeal lodged by the incumbent governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, today, November 6, 2023.
The appeal is challenging the verdict of the Kano Election Petition Tribunal, which nullified his election victory.
Governor Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is contesting the tribunal’s decision that invalidated 165,663 of his votes on the grounds that they lacked the requisite signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The deduction of these votes brought Yusuf’s total down to 853,939, trailing his rival, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Nasiru Gawuna, by over 30,000 votes.

Recall that INEC declared Yusuf the winner of the March 18, 2023, election after he secured 1,019,602 votes against his opponent, Gawuna, who secured 890,705 votes.
The tribunal had proclaimed Gawuna the rightful winner of the governorship election and directed INEC to revoke Yusuf’s certificate of return and issue a fresh one to Gawuna.
The case, with the number CA/KN/EP/GOV/KAN/34/2023, will be heard in Abuja.
