The Kano State Hisbah Board, commonly referred to as the Sharia Police, has issued a directive prohibiting male Disc Jockeys (DJs) from participating in events predominantly attended by women throughout the state.

This announced by the Commander General of the Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, during a recent meeting with DJ representatives in the state.

He said, “As an Islamic state, it is unacceptable for us to allow the indiscriminate mixing of males and females at the same event. This is because this act can promote and spread immorality.”

He emphasized that moving forward, only female officiants would be permitted to preside over gatherings exclusive to women. Sheikh Daurawa highlighted that this measure aimed to prevent mingling between men and women during public events, citing religious and moral considerations.

He underscored the importance of upholding standards that discourage behaviors conflicting with Islamic principles, emphasizing that as a state governed by Islamic laws, such adherence was paramount.

Jamil Mabai, a journalist with Trust TV, recounted an incident where he was detained by the Katsina State Hisbah Corps while at their office on official duty. Mabai clarified that he had visited the corps headquarters for a follow-up interview with their Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Akilu, regarding an incident involving their personnel.

He disclosed his intention to interview the corps’ PRO concerning a resident named Mallam Gambo, who was fatally shot by a member of the Community Watch Corps.

According to Mabai, the resident was killed when a Community Watch Corps operative, tasked with safeguarding communities against bandit attacks, discharged their firearm while Hisbah officials were attempting to shut down a wedding with a DJ.

Upon arriving at the Hisbah headquarters for the scheduled interview, Mabai found the PRO unavailable.

Unbeknownst to him, the PRO’s absence was a ploy to detain him. While waiting, Hisbah officers approached, detained him, and confiscated his phone, citing it as an “order from above.”
